The WATCH project

3 days training on film making

On the 28th of May till the 30th of May, the TYAP media team held the initial training workshop for the human rights documentary project the WATCH at the Holiday Garden Resort Chiang Mai. In all 16 participants from 5 organizations and 3 university institutions in Chiang Mai attended the 3 day training event. The training concentrated on 2 main ideas: the first being on exploring the participant’s knowledge and experience in regards to Human Rights issues in the north of Thailand, with the second being to train the participants in documentary film making. Participants were given an opportunity to explore the issues in regards to migrant workers, LGBTIQ rights, child rights, rights of people living with HIV and the right to sex education. Moreover the participants were given an opportunity to shoot and edit a short film, made on the hotel grounds

The WATCH project will train 10 participants to be documentary filmmakers on human rights issues in the north of Thailand. 5 youth from universities will join 5 youth members from 5 organizations in Chiang Mai. The 5 organizations that will join the project are TYAP, MPLUS, MAP Foundation, Violet Home and YMCA. In the coming 2 months the 5 groups will make one 15minute film each.

The WATCH project is supported by the Youth Action Fund, OSI Youth and MAP Radio.

Souk Pao Tang Pet Peua Chom Chon Project (Sex Education in the community project)

Norng Peuang Group

On the 23rd of May youth from the youth groups of Norng Peuang organized 1 day training at the local government offices at Norng Peuang Amphur Sarapi. As part of the Souk Pao Tan Pet Peua Chom Chon project, youth taught their peers about Aids, sex education and sexuality. Throughout the day the leaders explored the attitudes of their peers in regards to sexuality, with leaders having conversations with their peers about what LGBTIQ issues exist in the local community. In all there were 29 youth that attended the activities organized by the 9 youth leaders. There was also considerable community support with 35 members from the public attending the training event to learn more about sexuality in the community.

Civilian and Human Rights training in Chiang Rai

On the 22nd – 23rd May 2010, TYAP’s youth leadership team headed to Nattipol Resort in Amphur Mae Kam in the province of Chiang Rai to lead activities on Human and Child rights. Apart from learning about such things as child rights, the attending youth were also able to lean about self protection from the local police station from Wing Pa Pao with come police officers demonstrating basic Akido techniques. All of the 43 attending youth participants were from the surrounding villages in Mae Jam and all of the participants were young women aged between 13-17. The local governments of Pa Sak, Sri Cam and Pa Theug as well as the international NGO PLAN international were also involved in the 2 day activities.

Leadership Training in Lampang

On the 26th – 28th of April 2010, the TYAP team headed to the Siam Cement activity center in Lampang. There TYAP trained 31 youth from the Jae Hom district in Lampang, youth aged between 13-18 years. The purpose of the training was to build on the youth leadership capabilities of the youth. The project is being overseen by World Vision.

Souk Pao Tang Pet Peua Chom Chon Project (Sex Education in the community project)

Tackwang Youth Group

Following the events held at Cherng Dtoi, the youth group from Tackwang also held an information stall at their local village community music fair on Sunday the 28th of March. In all 6 members from the Tackwang group organized a stall where they set up games, that were designed to test the knowledge of youth from the community, in regards to sex education and HIV.

Souk Pao Tang Pet Peua Chom Chon Project (Sex Education in the community project)

Cherng Dtoi Youth Group

On the 28th of March, 12 members from the Cherng Dtoi youth group conducted sex education awareness activities at the middle school of Cherng Dtoi. The youth groups held games with members of the public, questioning the public about their knowledge about sex education and HIV. The youth groups interacted with as many as 30 people directly, while also having up to 80 community members respond to their wall presentations on sexuality. The wall presentations were made up of particular images (with a focus on sexuality) with space given for members of the public to write down their opinions and ideas.

Youth Media Network

Study Visit

On the 26th of March 20 youth representatives from 5 countries (Thailand, Philippines, China, Laos and Vietnam) attended a youth media presentation at TYAP. The 20 participant were all members of various youth media organizations in their respective countries. The presentation was an opportunity for TYAP to share its experience in working with youth media, as well as for TYAP to learn more about youth media practices within other countries.

Souk Pao Tang Pet Peua Chom Chon Project (Sex Education in the community project)

On the 24th and 25th of March TYAP conducted trainings for 8 youth leaders at the local government offices in Tackwang. The training was an add on to the trainings conducted at the end of February in Mae Rim. The 8 youth leaders trained will be part of the Souk Pao Tang Pet Peua Chom Chon Project (Sex Education in the community project) together with the 47 leaders trained in February. The trained leaders plan to hold an information stall on the 28th of February during the Tackwang community musical fair.

PLAN Study Visit

On the 11th of March, 8 members from PLAN International Bangladesh visited TYAP for a study tour of TYAP’s work and project sites. The objective of the PLAN international visit was to learn more about TYAP’s work with youth, in particular to sex education, HIV and reproductive health. In Bangladesh PLAN international has launched a comprehensive sex education and reproductive health project with a particular focus on youth. After the presentation at TYAP, the 8 members of PLAN together with TYAP, visited TYAP’s partners in the community of Cherng Dtoi. The visit included stops at the local middle school as well as the offices of the local government of Cherng Dtoi.

International Women’s Day 2010

Women for Change

On Monday the 8th of March, TYAP participated in the International Women’s Day events at Tapae Gate Chiang Mai. The events organized by our friends at MAP Foundation, were focused on celebrating Women’s actions for equality as well as the positive role women have in Thai society, but the event also was important to shed light on issues of injustice that women still face today. TYAP held a stall asking people from the public, their opinion on what work still needs to be done in order for there to be equality between the sexes.

The main points of the Women for Change event are:

CHANGE male aggression and violence, CHANGE the tolerance to hurting women.
CHANGE the use and abuse of women’s beauty to sell products and commodify women, CHANGE who makes the decision about women’s bodies.
CHANGE the labour laws to include all of women who work: agriculture workers, domestic workers, home workers and sex workers.
CHANGE the laws which criminalize sex workers.
CHANGE the military regimes that violate our right to political participation.

Youth Leadership Project 2010

Beautiful women’s Club Chiang Mai

On the 5th till the 7th of March, TYAP together with the Women’s Health Advocacy Foundation conducted training for 18 lesbian identified youth from Chiang Mai, at the Dream Garden Resort in Mae Rim. The trainings were focused on forming the foundations for a support group for lesbian youth in Chiang Mai.
The trainings were focused on knowledge about lesbian issues as well as exercise aimed at making participants to reflect and know more about oneself. The 2 days were also an opportunity for youth to connect and make new friends. The project will continue together with WHAF for the year 2010.
